Our Story

Our Story

In 1987 our five acre oceanfront property was purchased by developer, Rick Loughead. With the original direction of the property approved for a 270 unit hotel, the inevitable happened: Loughead fell in love with the property.

From there, Loughead decided to retain the development and partnered with Spalding Wathen. Both possessing the same passion for their vision, they decided to create something unique; something that stood out from all of the existing hotels sprinkled along the beautiful coastline of Pismo Beach. This is how the vision of Dolphin Bay Resort & Spa began.

After over 16 years of planning and fighting for approval, Loughead and Wathen finally broke ground in 2003. Dolphin Bay opened in stages beginning in 2006 and their vision was clearly appreciated by all guests and staff alike. Wathen sadly passed in 2005 and was unable to see the beautiful design come to fruition. However, his memory still lives on within our beautiful resort.

With its Mediterranean style architecture and secluded setting, guests feel as if they are thousands of miles from home, while being centrally located on the Coastline of California.

Staff Philosophy

Celebrating our tenth anniversary in 2016, Dolphin Bay Resort & Spa greets visitors from all continents and all industries. Some bask in a long, relaxing destination stay, while others simply enjoy a luxurious stopover between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Our mission is 'to deliver, without compromise, an exceptional experience of service and amenities.' Spacious and well-appointed accommodations, a rejuvenating spa, and an award-winning restaurant make this easy for the resort to achieve. But what truly sets us apart from the rest is the unparalleled, personalized service offered to each and every guest. We anticipate our guests’ needs, without effort, to ensure lifelong memories are created.

General Manager

Growing up on the Central Coast, General Manager, Erica Krueger, found her love for people and customer service early on in life. Erica’s Grandparents owned and operated their town bakery which was known for its amazing products and genuine customer service. She began working alongside her mother and grandparents at a young age and saw how a remarkable product paired with sincere service created customer demand and loyalty.

Erica holds an undergraduate degree in Business Administration with a minor in Human Resources Management from Columbia College. After graduating and traveling extensively, Erica realized the Central Coast is where she wanted to live and be part of the community. During her travels, her passion for hospitality excellence flourished as she experienced a variety of services.

Erica’s prior experience includes Guest Service Agent, Guest Services Manager, Front Office/Revenue Manager, Director of Rooms Division and Resort Director. As General Manager she oversees the operations of the entire property.

Erica's devotion to her team and our guests is reflected in her leadership and vision. She embodies our mission to deliver, without compromise, an exceptional experience of service and amenities and has a personal commitment to the success of Dolphin Bay Resort & Spa.
