Our Story

In 1987, developer Rick Loughead purchased our five-acre oceanfront property with the intention of turning it into a 270-unit hotel, but the inevitable happened—he fell in love with the property.

From there, Loughead decided to retain the development, partnering with Spalding Wathen to create something truly unique, something that would stand out from all of the existing hotels sprinkled along the Pismo Beach coastline.

After over 16 years of planning and fighting for approval, Loughead and Wathen finally broke ground in 2003, and Dolphin Bay began opening in stages in 2006. Sadly, Wathen passed in 2005 and was unable to see the design come to fruition, but his memory lives on within our beautiful resort.

General Manager

Our General Manager, Erica Krueger, found her love for people and customer service early on in life when she began helping at her grandparents’ town bakery. Working alongside her mother and grandparents, she recognized that remarkable products paired with sincere service create customer demand and loyalty. From there, her passion for hospitality excellence only grew.

Erica holds an undergraduate degree in Business Administration with a minor in Human Resources Management from Columbia College. After graduating and traveling extensively, Erica returned to the Central Coast to be part of the community.

As General Manager, Erica oversees the operations of the entire property. Her devotion to her team and our guests is reflected in her leadership and vision. She embodies our mission to deliver, without compromise, an exceptional experience of service and amenities and has a personal commitment to the success of Dolphin Bay Resort & Spa.
